It wasn’t long ago when Sony announced its last flagship at IFA 2017, and now the company is here with the all new Xperia XZ2-series smartphones. Against some of the earlier reports that suggested the launch of three Sony flagships at MWC, the Japanese brand made two devices official at the event earlier today– the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. Unlike Samsung’s newest offerings, both the Sony devices only differ on their aesthetics and outer appearance, while what’s inside remains very similar.

Sony Xperia XZ2

Following the new design language, the Xperia XZ2 sports a curved back that is much more ergonomic than its previous iterations, though it makes the phone much thicker, too. The front has got a new 18:9 Triluminos display panel measuring 5.7 inches with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 (FHD+). The display is HDR capable and is covered with Gorilla Glass 5, so is the back of the phone. Sony has retained its stereo speaker setup on this phone along with S-Force surround sound experience, DSEE HX, and LDAC, but it did away with the headphone jack, despite the phone’s increased thickness.

Despite the fact that Sony hasn’t gone for a dual-camera setup like most of the smartphone vendors have, the company has made some serious advancements in the camera department. First off, the phone features 19MP Motion Eye camera with a 1/2.3” Exmor RS sensor that can shoot super slow-motion videos at 960fps at 1080p resolution. In comparison, the Galaxy S9 can take 960fps videos at just 720p resolution and Sony phones have a huge advantage here. Not only this, the camera on the Sony Xperia XZ2 can record 4K HDR videos, making it the first phone to boast these capabilities.

The Xperia XZ2 is powered by the Snapdragon 845 processor with Adreno 630 GPU and is paired with 4GB of RAM. The phone has an internal storage capacity of 64GB, which can be expanded further up to 400GB. It is IP65/68 rated, will be available in a dual-SIM variant as well, and comes pre-loaded with Android 8.0 Oreo. The fingerprint scanner of the phone is placed on the back and supports Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB 3.1 Type-C, Wi-Fi 8.2.11 ac MIMO. The battery capacity of the phone is 3,180mAh that also supports Quick Charge 3.0, and wireless charging. Liquid Black, Liquid Silver, Deep Green, and Ash Pink are the colour options the phone will be available with.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

As mentioned earlier, the Xperia XZ2 Compact shares most of the features with the Xperia XZ2. The Compact’s display is a tad smaller at 5 inches, but it retains the FHD+ resolution along with all the bells and whistles its larger sibling comes with. A major difference in this device is the use of scratch-resistant polycarbonate as the build material, instead of metal and glass on the Xperia XZ2.

With that, the wireless charging capabilities are also lost, but as said, all the other features including the remarkable camera options, processing power, stereo speakers, etc. are still present on the Compact variant. The Xperia XZ2 Compact has a battery capacity of 2,870mAh and will be available in Black, White Silver, Moss Green, and Coral Pink colour options. Both the phones will roll-out globally starting next month with no word on pricing yet.
