Huawei is working on a new smartphone chipset to be known as Kirin 710. The chipset is being developed by the HiSilicon Technologies which is a subsidiary brand of Huawei smartphone solutions. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer uses its very own chipset on all of their devices.
The naming of this upcoming chipset is not a coincidence but is aimed at the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710. This report is coming from a publication which goes by the name of DigiTimes. The report clearly states that the naming is done to take on the Snapdragon 710.
Huawei’s Kirin 710 chipset to come with built-in discrete NPU
The Kirin 710 is more like an upgrade of its predecessor Kirin 659 CPU. This new chipset is being fabricated by a 12nm process at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Also, this processor will come with brand’s own chipset architecture based on the Cortex A73 CPUs.
Huawei’s Kirin 710 will fix the huge gap between their flagship processor Kirin 970 and the mid-budget Kirin 659 chipset. Just like Kirin 710, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 fills the large gap between the Snapdragon 800-series and Snapdragon 600-series.
The Kirin 710 comes with built-in discrete Neural Processing Unit which will help the processor to perform AI functionalities. In comparison, the Snapdragon 710 is built using a 10nm process at Samsung Electronics which features multi-core AI engine. Apart from that, this chipset offers better battery efficiency and overall performance than the 600 series.
With the Kirin 710, the brand can easily compete with the other smartphones powered by Qualcomm’s 710 chipsets. Both of the 710 processors, in spite of being from a different company, will offer superior performance without costing you much. This will help smartphone makers to create budget devices without compromising on performance.
When the Kirin 710 will be announced?
As of now, the brand has confirmed neither the launch date nor the existence of this chipset. The first ever smartphone powered by Kirin 710 is likely to be the Huawei Nova 3. Codenamed Paris, Huawei Nova 3 might see its official unveiling somewhere in the month of July. It is expected to feature a 19.5:9 all-screen display and a dual lens camera.
We might see the same processor on Huawei’s Mate Lite range of devices. Other than that, future Honor devices might make use of this processor since they largely focus on budget and affordable devices. To recall, Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is the first smartphone to come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset.
