Is the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge the new #bendgate?

After the launch of the iPhone 6 it was called #bendgate, because it had bended in the pockets of some users. When that happened something new was coming to the mobile ecosystem: a new “bend test”. Sometimes done by hand or with well-calibrated testing rigs. So, when a new device is launched some tech websites go to their testing rigs and bend the device to find the point of permanent deformation. And that is exactly what happened with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

The folks over at the phone insurance company SquareTrade took a testing rig and they started to work on it immediately after the launch of the fragile Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. And this is good for measuring, SquareTrade also tested the original #bendgate and also the other high-end Android flagship, the HTC One M9.

To get to the results immediately, the Galaxy S6 Edge and the iPhone 6 Plus both suffered permanent deformation at 110 pounds of force, while the One M9 did a better job at 120 pounds of force. However, because of the curved construction on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge the glass broke right away, while on the other 2 devices it broke at a higher load. And that isn’t really a surprise, the dual-curve on the S6 Edge introduces stress points which a flat phone just would have.

You could look at this articles and think, my device can handle everything, so I will use it like it can do everything. That is not the moral of this story, there is only one moral: treat your device with attention, regardless of the brand of the model. Sure, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge can withstand some intense shocks, but you really need to face that the thin profile and the dual-curve come at a price. And please, don’t try to bend your device at home.
