Qualcomm was reported to be working on three processors which include the Snapdragon 640, Snapdragon 460, and the Snapdragon 670. The chip maker has yet to announce the Snapdragon 670 officially but it is already making news. The processor was expected to make an appearance in the first half of 2018 and it seems like Xiaomi will be the first to take hold of it.

According to some sources, Xiaomi has already started working on a couple of smartphones, codenamed “Sirius” and “Comet”, sporting the unannounced chipset. The news comes from XDA Developers’ editor-in-chief, Mishaal Rahman who confirmed that Xiaomi has already laid the foundation for the new chipset to make an appearance in their upcoming device. One of the devices is expected to be announced as Mi Note 4, and since the Mi Note 3 was powered by Snapdragon 660, its successor is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 670.

Xiaomi Redmi Pro 2

On the other hand, the second device is tipped to be the Mi Max 3, successor to the Mi Max 2. These are just assumptions and nothing has been confirmed by the company as of now. The launch of both these devices could still be months away to get a confirmation on either of them. Notably, Qualcomm and Xiaomi had recently tied up for the debut of Snapdragon 636 chipset inside the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It wouldn’t be surprising if the partnership is taken a step ahead for the introduction of Snapdragon 670, too.

Mishaal also mentioned in his tweet that the Snapdragon 670 is an octa-core CPU (2 cores + 6 cores) which is clocked at 2.6GHz. A report in February claimed that the Snapdragon 670 is not expected to imply the usual 4-core +4-core big.LITTLE architecture, rather, it’ll house two high-performance cores paired with six low-performance cores.

Keeping in mind the fact that Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 660 series in May last year, we can expect the Snapdragon 670 series to launch next month. According to some reports, Xiaomi is also tipped to launch an Helio P60-powered smartphone later this year.
