It is quite a rare scenario when a two-year smartphone gets a major Android update, even though it was once a flagship. While most of the brands are struggling even to upgrade their current flagships to Android Oreo, according to some reports, Samsung will be updating the Galaxy S6 to Android Oreo. The phone was launched in early 2015 as the then flagship of the company.
Samsung has already confirmed that the 2017 Samsung flagships along with the Galaxy S7 will be getting the Android Oreo update. Samsung hasn’t given any official word on the Galaxy S6 but a Reddit user got the scoop from the Samsung support centres. To back this claim, the user got it confirmed by four different Samsung representatives.
The Reddit user CyberConCoder got the confirmation from the Samsung representatives that the 2015 flagship will indeed be getting the Oreo update. Samsung support centres might not be the best source of information if this nature but when multiple representatives are saying the same thing in unison, then the information has to be genuine.
Moreover, one of the Samsung support representatives also mentioned that his supervisor has also confirmed the information. All the chats can be seen in the screenshots provided by the user himself. What is still not known is the estimated time by when the update can land to the devices. No such information was provided by any of the representatives.
At a time when we are expecting the Galaxy S9 to be announced in a few months, the already three-generation old Galaxy S6 will reportedly get the latest Android update. This is a kind of news that we only get to hear from Apple for their older iPhones. If it turns out to be true, we might see a change in the way updates are delivered by most of the Android OEMs.
In a similar fashion, Google has also confirmed to provide software updates to the new Pixel 2 smartphones for up to three years. If the things go on in this way, we should expect to see more and more Android phones getting latest software updates years after their initial launch.
