After a long invite-only test run (and even rumors going back a year), WhatsApp finally pushed out the new calling feature to all their Android users.

Activating the calling feature in WhatsApp initially required some sort of “hack”, as well as an invite which you could get from someone who already had the feature. After a long time of waiting the feature seems to be openly available when you have their latest version of WhatsApp for Android with version number: 2.12.19, you will be getting it without getting invited by another user of WhatsApp.

Once you have installed the new version of WhatsApp, you should see a Calls log tab in the top menu. Making a call is so easy as tapping the “plus” button. From there, the call interface is very ease with a few switches: Hanging up, activate the speaker, mute and switch to the chat interface. Calls connect almost instantly and the sound quality is crisp and without interruptions.

There’s a change that the feature is activated on the server-side (so it can take a while before you get it), but for now I have seen loads of people with the new feature without calling for it. And I also have the new feature, without making a call or getting called for it. Also there are a lot of threats on forums suggesting that the feature is now rolling out to everybody, so it is looking like the real deal.

Don’t have the newest WhatsApp version, then you can download it from the Play Store or from WhatsApp’s website. If you choose their own website, you need to enable installing apps from unknown sources before installing it.
