A while ago, Synaptics released a statement, confirming that a company has started mass production of an in-display fingerprint sensor in association with one of the top five smartphone makers in the world. For a while, people thought that it might be Samsung as the date of Galaxy S9 and S9+ launch is not too far, but surprisingly that particular smartphone maker turned out to be Vivo, which is owned by BBK Electronics that also parents Oppo as well as OnePlus.

CES 2018 just started on 8th of January, in Las Vegas and CES is known as one of the largest global events to show innovative consumer products. And now, the first-ever smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor will also be unveiled during CES 2018. Vivo has released a teaser, that hints towards this new smartphone having the in-display fingerprint scanner, which is to be unveiled on 10th of January at the CES.

It was already known that Vivo is working on a phone like this. Analyst Patrick Moorhead described a bit of his experience with a pre-production Vivo phone equipped with the in-display fingerprint scanner, where he describes the sensor as “fast and simple” and Synaptics has also claimed that it is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition, like Apple’s Face ID.

If Vivo really shows off a phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner, it is sure that Android warriors and Apple fans boys rivalry will find a new edge, as this step could potentially spark the trend of using an in-display fingerprint scanner. This will further maximize the display area and minimize bezels for phones where the scanner can’t be placed on the back. However, Apple seems to be reluctant about fingerprint recognition as they are already moving on with Face ID, dumping the Touch ID completely and future iPhones are expected to come with Face ID only.
