The Chinese smartphone maker has started to send out invites for the launch of its new phone under the Redmi series. Xiaomi is expected to launch the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus here in India and the event is scheduled for February 14. This is going to be the company’s first announcement for 2018.

Xiaomi first announced the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in China back in December for a price starting $120. The duo is the first to get an 18:9 display in Xiaomi’s budget portfolio. There is still a chance that Xiaomi might announce the Redmi Note 5 instead. There were speculations suggesting that the Redmi 5 Plus will indeed be launched as the Redmi Note 5 in the international markets.

But nothing is confirmed yet. All that the invite mentions is a big “5” in the centre and based on that, it can be either of the two. Some recent reports also suggested that Xiaomi might run an Explorer Program, like it did last time, for the Redmi Note 5, but nothing as such has happened yet.

There have been quite a few leaks about the Redmi Note 5 that have revealed the phone’s specification. Going by the response Redmi Note 4 got in India, the chances are high that Xiaomi might do a global launch of the Redmi Note 5 in India. The phone was earlier reported to be launched in January but that clearly didn’t happen.

It looks like we will have to wait for another week to know which phone would finally be launched. Meanwhile, Xiaomi Mi 6X was spotted online with an iPhone X-like rear camera housing that could be the successor to Mi A1. Mi 7 has also been getting a few leaks which, apparently, wouldn’t be launched at MWC 2018.
