There are very few companies who have announced as many smart watches as Samsung so we didn’t expect one by Samsung this IFA, but here we have the Gear S2 which unexpectedly feels much more elegant and premium in hand then Samsung’s other tries in the smart watch line up.
Therefore we can say that after a year of attempts by Samsung in the Smart Watch line up, they have successfully created a controversial smart watch which feels elegant on the wrist and premium for its range.
We said “controversial” as this smart watch runs on the Tizen OS which is completely different and unique from Android Wear used by many competitor’s of this mobile giant.
One big thing that Samsung did right is that this device can be used even without pairing an Android device but if you want to pair, Android devices with at least 1.5 GB RAM running Android KitKat 4.4.4 and above are supported but Samsung says that the S2 may not work properly with mobile devices from other manufactures which have the features implemented differently.
A young OS means a whole new team of developers. Therefore the app selection for this device will not be similar to the Android Wear devices but Samsung has promised that approximately 1000 apps will be available at the launch of the Gear S2, many of which take the advantage of the sweet rotating bezel.
Taking about the bezzels, it is really an useful and funky innovation by Samsung. It is an unique way of moving around the interface without t touching the screen but you still need to use the 1.2 Inch circular AMOLED touch for most of the operations. The best part about the is that there is a very satisfying click each time you rotate it which can be used to use the device in a much more sensible way which is not present on the smart watches by the competitors running Android Wear.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear S2 is available at two variants : 40mm and 42mm where the 42 mm version will only come with 3G. In respect of colors, the Galaxy Gear S2 will be available in dark grey and silver versions.
In the software side, you have Tizen OS running with customizable watch faces with news, weather and ESPN updates and therefore this device has a WiFi chip built in and NFC is also available which will be useful for Samsung Pay available in the future ( It will be unlocked by a software update)
At the end, the Samsung Gear S2 is really a great innovation by Samsung in terms of design and look and feel. The price point will device if it will be a good buy or not.
