As the quick charge technology from Qualcomm version 2.0 has proven to be fast at bringing your death phone battery back to life. At the Motorola Nexus 6 it did 50% of the 3200mAh battery in just 40 minutes time. However, Qualcomm is not the only company which was thinking about charging your device quicker than normal. Oppo has its own VOOC flash charging 1.0 technology, and they just revealed how it works. But maybe you are thinking, is it any better than Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology?
Oppo almost worked on their VOOC flash charging 1.0 for three years and brought the first iteration of it on the market together with the Oppo Find 7. After it is released they finally give us a look inside their technology.
According to the numbers that Oppo is giving their VOOC flash charging 1.0 can charge the 3000mAh battery from death to 75% in just 30 minutes. If you see those number I don’t need to tell you that is fast, but Oppo also claims that 5 minutes of charging is enough to give you 2 hours of calling time. That is perfect if your phones battery is just death and you want it to go on very quick.
VOOC flash charge 1.0 VS Qualcomm’s Quick Charging 2.0?
The technology in Qualcomm’s Quick Charge allows a maximum power transfer between the charger and phone of 15W. This is also sliced into three: 5 volts is giving you 3 amps, at 9 volt you are getting 1.67 amps and at 12 volt you are getting 1.25 amps. The Rapid charger from HTC and the Turbo charger from Motorola are operating at those specifications. For a comparison between those, Quick Charge 1.0 allowed 2 amps at 5 volt for 10 watts of power, older chargers allow 1 amp at 5 volt, if not less.
Rather than scaling up the voltages Oppo’s VOOC flash charge 1.0 and a smaller transfer drop, the VOOC charging system aims to brute force more current over 5 volt. The standard of the VOOC is at 5 amps which is giving a massive 25 watts of power to charger your battery with, but as always that is only at ideal operating conditions. And that is 66% faster than the technology coming from Qualcomm however, if you are using a bad cable the technology coming from Oppo will be affected much more than the technology coming from Qualcomm.
There are also some differences between the two on how they are detecting the compatibility of the used phone. The charger coming from Qualcomm will match the maximum power output to the phone on the charger, and so they make sure nothing is going wrong inside the phone hanging on the charger. Oppo has removed the current control circuit from the phone to the VOOC charger which means there is less heat disposal inside the phone and by that they are making sure all the parts inside the phone have a longer life. The VOOC charger is able to detects if it is a VOOC compatible device, if not it will deliver 1A and if you have a VOOC compatible device it will deliver 5A to the phone.
