App permissions

Always when you want to install a app in the Google Play Store you’re asked to give the app certain permissions. With the launch of Android M, they’re giving you the option to deny a app to use all the permissions a app is asking. So, if you’ve a calculator out of the play store which is asking you to give the permission that it can read all your contacts, you’re now able to deny the app from reading those contacts. And the ability for a app to ask for one-time permission to use things like your mic.

Developer preview for Nexus devices

Google also released the Developer preview of Android M today for the Google Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Nexus player. This preview will get updates until the stable version of Android M is released later this year. Probably in Q3 later this year, and they also made the Android M SDK for app developers available so they can start to use all the functions that’re available in the latest version of Android.

Directly go to the app

With the release of Android M a few new features are released and they’re making everything in Android just a bit smoother. When you want to open a link in Android Lollipop or older it goes directly to Google Chrome, now with the release of Android M you can configure that with certain links it will open the app it belongs to instead of the Chrome browser.

Battery life

With the new version of Android they’re also improving the battery life of a device that is in standby mode. The device will use the gyroscope and the accelerometer to know if it in such a situation, and if your device knows that it is in such a situation it will shut down running apps and the system also denies wakelocks, no Wi-Fi-scans will be done if you’re in that situation, apps can’t sync data and the usage of cellular data will slow down or it gets totally shut down.

Android Pay

With the latest version of Android Google is releasing Android Pay, which is very simplistic, a very secure payment service for Android, can use the fingerprint sensor to do the payment and it works with 700.000 stores. The developers have the option to enable Android Pay and the usage of a fingerprint sensor for a payment in their app with the latest Android M SDK.

USB Type C

Before today the standard for Android was the micro-USB port, now with the USB-C port coming to more devices, Android is finally supporting USB 3.1 which is used in the USB type C.

App data backup

This feature is for me the best of Android M, Google is finally going to back-up the app data. The backups are made within the Google Drive account of the user. But, the developer of the app needs to support this kind of back-up, if the developer doesn’t allow Android to back-up the data of the app you still need to configure the app when you’re doing a factory rest or if you install a new ROM.

Small interface changes

Android M doesn’t change much to the Material Design interface, but it adds some features that are really welcome, such as the possibility to change what you’ve in the notification center. The possibility to have a dark Settings UI, the app drawer is totally changed, and if you’re in the notification center and touch the do not disturb button you can choose between: Priority, Alarms Only and Total Silence.
