Apple is giving Rs 3,900 as a refund to all those customers, who had paid for the out-of-warranty battery replacement for iPhone 6 and later models. Apple’s “iPhone out-of-warranty battery replacement credit” covers battery replacements at any Apple authorized service locations between January 1, 2017, to January 28, 2018.
The refund will be offered to only those customers who have completed at an Apple authorized service location including Apple Store, Apple Repair Center, and Apple Authorized Service Provider. The new battery replacement programme is eligible for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
The company stated it will alert customers who are eligible for refunds via email between May 23 and July 2018 with all instructions on how to claim their credit. The refund will be provided as an electronic funds transfer or a credit on the credit card used to pay for the battery replacement service. In case you feel that you are eligible for a refund but are not contacted by the brand, you can contact the company directly. Though, you’ll need to provide a proof of service in that case.
Importantly, the brand will not offer credits for the iPhone battery replacements that were performed within the warranty. So remember, this is only for those whose iPhones were out-of-warranty, and for replacements done at an authorized center. If you got the battery replaced at a non-Apple authorized place, then there is no chance of a refund.
This action by iPhone maker has a lot to do with the official declaration that Apple throttles the speed of previous-generation iPhones with old batteries. Last year in December, the company admitted to secretly slowing down the performance of old iPhones to enhance the battery life. Due to this, consumers were angry and some users even filed a class action suit.
Now, as an apology, the California based company has introduced battery replacement programme under which the brand cut down the price of battery replacements to Rs 2,000 ($29). Earlier, users paid Rs 5,990 ($79) for battery replacement for older iPhones.
