The Apple iPhone SE released yesterday on April 15. Yes, there weren’t any bells and whistles or a glamorous launch event but rather a simple press release that Apple made to announce the device. It is considered as the most affordable and powerful iPhone smartphone with the best-in-class single-camera setup and A13 Bionic chipset. Although we are truly excited about the device, it appears as if it is just a glorified and enhanced iPhone 8 rather than an upgrade to iPhone SE (2016).
According to the press release, the iPhone SE (2020) offers a state-of-the-art 4.7-inch Retina HD display and since Apple is known for its displays, this one doesn’t disappoint a lot. There are huge bezels around the display just like the good old days so you don’t have to worry about notches anymore. The display has a vibrant wide color gamut that offers millions of colors and vibrancy along with incredible color accuracy and more. It also has Dolby Vision and HDR10 ready that makes it a must-try if you are looking for a cheaper but powerful iPhone out there.
The front will have a single camera setup and there’s a home button designed with sapphire crystal and a steel ring around that. The home button equips the second-generation TouchID that we have been waiting for on iPhone SE to arrive and it’s here. The back, on the other hand, isn’t much different from iPhone 8 as it has a single camera setup at the back with Apple branding and that’s all.
Moving towards the most obvious questions you might have, the chipset. iPhone SE arrives with the powerful A13 Bionic chipset which delivers unparalleled performance like no others. If you think you have seen this chipset then the answer is yes, you have seen it with iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.
The chipset is equipped with a dedicated 8-core Neural Engine that can carry out 5 trillion operations per second. The chipset is also equipped with two Machine Learning Accelerators and a new ML Controller that offers high performance and power efficiency. The device is backed with iOS 13 which has a slew of apps and features with many injected to use ML and Core ML.
Apple iPhone SE arrives with Qi-wireless charging so yes, it is finally here. Note that the phone still arrives with a 5W fast charger and if you wish to extend it to its limit i.e. 18W, you need to buy an additional fast charger. Anyways, the device also supports Dual SIM with eSIM, blazing-fast speeds with Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit-class LTE support.
iPhones are known for their brilliant cameras hands down. The iPhone SE has one of the best single-camera setups at the back with a 12MP wide-angle sensor with an aperture of f/1.8. The sensor uses Neural Engine and Image Signal Processor of A13 Bionic chipset to perform high-end computational photography delivering one of the best, detailed, and crisp images. The front 7MP sensor uses ML and monocular depth estimation that gives it the ability to grab excellent portrait shots like no others. The device can shoot videos at 4K @ 60fps and arrives with extended and native editing features that give you an upper hand when compared to other devices.
Finally, the device is IP67 Certified making it resistant against both water at the depth of a metre for 30 minutes and dust as well. Talking about the color variants, iPhone SE is available in three colors i.e. Black, White, and Product(RED). It will be up for pre-orders starting Friday (April 17) and start shipping on April 24 in the United States. It is available at a price tag of just $399 in the US for its 64GB storage variant while the 128GB variant goes up for sale at $449 and finally, the 256GB storage variant goes up for sale at $549. Those qualifying trade-in can get their hands on iPhone SE at just $229.
