As per Apple’s own admission from last year’s iPhone 11 series launch, the Apple iPhone Xr was the best-selling smartphone for them in the US since launch. Now, a new report reveals that the iPhone Xr is the best-selling smartphone all over the world.

Now, this is quite interesting because of the fact that iPhones are believed to be expensive outside of the US. Apple has also struggled to price their phones right in the Indian market and they have gone on record to reveal the same.

So to see that the overall sales of iPhone Xr were the highest in the world means that Apple has not only sold iPhone Xr units in the US but also other markets such as India, China and others.

One contributing factor to this report is the fact that Apple launched various discounts on the iPhone Xr last year during the holiday season. This meant that the iPhone Xr, which was already the cheapest powerful and modern iPhone, became even cheaper all over the world.

In India, the iPhone Xr was also competing with the likes of OnePlus in the holiday sales season where the price of both these devices was almost on par. So it meant that Apple’s brand value helped them sell much more units of the iPhone Xr.

If we look at the numbers from Omdia’s report, the research firm says that Apple could have shipped 46.3 million iPhone Xr units in 2019. This is far greater than the number of iPhone Xr units shipped in 2018 which were 23.1 million.

Also, Omdia reveals that iPhone 11 shipments stood at 37.3 million units, higher than iPhone Xr’s first-year units, during the year. This tells us that the iPhone 11 is selling even better than the iPhone Xr which could mean that the phone could be the best-seller in 2020.

As for the other smartphones in the top 5 list of best-selling phones around the world, Apple took the first two spots with the iPhone Xr and iPhone 11. Then, we have Samsung with their Galaxy A10, Galaxy A150 and the Galaxy A20 which are all budget and mid-range Android phones.

Interestingly, the iPhone 11 Pro Max managed to be on the sixth spot for the best-selling phone of the year at 17.6 million units shipped with the iPhone 8 in the seventh spot at 17.4 million units shipped.

Even though four out of the seven best-selling phones are Apple iPhones, Omidia says that the shipments from Apple remained 4.6% lower in 2019 compared to the previous year.

Omdia adds that “The company’s continued dominance on this front is all the more remarkable when considering that Apple’s price hikes caused overall iPhone shipments to decline last year.”
