Everyone must be aware that TikTok is currently the most trending social platform around the world. This means that every other social media platform is trying to take the trending elements of TikTok and integrating them inside their own platform is whichever way possible. We have already seen Facebook releasing its own version of TikTok whereas other platforms have also done the same. Now, it is revealed that YouTube is also working on a TikTok-like app which is reportedly called Shorts.
This report comes from The Information and the publication claims that YouTube Shorts will be able to take advantage of licensed music that YouTube Music already has in its catalogue. Apart from that, the idea of creating videos will remain the same where people will be able to create short videos with music in the background. It is also said that there will be feed inside the mobile app where users will be able to upload their short videos called “Shorts”.
It is worth noting that YouTube already has its version of the Instagram Stories which are photos or videos that remain on the platform for just a 24-hour period after which they automatically disappear. Currently, you can see YouTube Stories from the channels you have subscribed on top of your YouTube app and Shorts seems to be an extension of the same.
The idea behind YouTube creating its own version of TikTok is basically looking at the increase in popularity of the BteDance-owned platform. We know that its userbase in continuously growing across both iOS and Android.
Therefore, YouTube also wants to take a piece of that cake and it can easily gain popularity since there are 2 billion+ monthly active users using the platform. Apart from that, YouTube already has licensing rights to music from big banner music houses which means it can easily take advantage of the same whereas TikTok has a limited catalogue of music in comparison.
