Huawei’s Kirin 980 goes official at IFA 2018, world’s first 5G-ready and 7nm mobile chipset

At IFA 2018 in Berlin, Huawei unveiled one of the most powerful mobile chipsets. Yes! we’re talking about much-awaiting flagship processor – HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC. The chip has been in the headlines for quite some time now and is fabricated with a 7nm manufacturing process making it the smallest mobile processor. On top of that, the Kirin 980 is the first 5G-ready smartphone SoC (System-on-Chip). 

Huawei’s Mate 20 series, which is releasing this October 16, will be the first one to come with the Kirin 980. The chip is comparatively efficient and powerful than its rivals and is being manufactured by China-based TSMC which also works for Qualcomm and other major chip makers.

Huawei stated that the Kirin 980 uses an 8-core CPU architecture with 2x high-performance Cortex-A76 cores and two power-efficient CortexA-76 cores assumably with ARM’s DynamIQ architecture for better performance at power-efficient mode. The other four cores are among low-power Cortex-A55 cores that will work in collaboration with Huawei’s Flex-scheduling technology that the smartphone maker recently developed. With the help of this technique, the processor switches between the cores based on the power requirements and other factors that make it more efficient than others.

Speaking of the clock speed and frequencies, the brand mentioned nothing at the unveiling. But, we do know that the high-performance will need a higher clock speed somewhere around 2.8 GHz thanks to a leak that surfaced previously. Then, we do know that the power-efficient cores will have a lower clock speed followed by the remaining four low-power cores with lower clock speeds.

At the event, Huawei stated that the System-on-chip (SoC) uses the newly release Mali-G76 GPU instead of previously used Mali-G72 paired with Kirin 970 and the figures are the create indicator of its sheer power. According to the smartphone maker, the new GPU outperforms the previous one by 46% along with 178% more power efficient which is phenomenal. The Kirin 980 plus Mali-G76 GPU collectively offer 37 percent better performance to the previous generation of processor used in Huawei’s P20 and P20 Pro smartphones.

Further, Kirin 980 packs a lot of potential and many worlds’ first such as, it is the first chipset developed on the 7nm manufacturing process to be commercially available which outperforms any 10nm chips by 20 percent in terms of performance and by 40 percent in terms of power efficiency. Also, the Kirin 980 is the first ever chipset to support LPDDR4X at 2133MHz and a dual NPU chip which Huawei calls as Dual-brain Power which is double the capacity compared to the previously used single NPU chip in Kirin 970 and it is 120 percent faster too.

Moving ahead, the Kirin 980 SoC has 1st Cat 21 modem that can take the maximum download speed of 1.4gbps of peak performance and wifi speeds of up to 1.7gbps. The Dual ISP used in Kirin 980 performs 46 percent better than the ISp packed with the previous version (Kirin 970) providing multi-camera support and higher data throughput among other features. For the benchmark scores, you’ll have to wait till October 16 when Huawei will officially launch the Mate 20 series smartphones in London.
