MediaTek introduced the Helio G95 and Helio G85 last year and it needed an upgrade for some time now. Turns out the chipmaker has already unveiled two new chipsets i.e. Helio G96 which is a successor to Helio G95; and second is the Helio G88 which is a successor to Helio G85. Here’s everything you need to know about the pair including their specifications and support.

MediaTek Helio G96 Specifications

The MediaTek Helio G96 brings support to 108MP max camera resolution which is higher than 64MP on G95. It brings a faster LTE modem ( with Cat 13 downlink) and Bluetooth 5.2 although the Wi-Fi remains at 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5).

The Helio G96 now gets an upgraded and faster UFS 2.2 storage than its predecessor along with support to 120Hz @ 1080p+ displays which includes both OLED and LCD panel. The octa-core CPU remains untouched at 2x Cortex-A76 high-performance cores clocked at 2.05GHz plus 6x Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores. However, the chipset gets a downgraded Mali G57 MC2. The chipset supports the same LPDDR4X RAM at 2133 MHz which is similar to Helio G95.

MediaTek Helio G88 Specifications

Talking about the second newest chip from MediaTek, it has the same CPU octa-core arrangement at 2x Cortex-A75 high-performance cores clocked at 2.0GHz plus 6x Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores. The GPU has remained unchanged at Mali-F52 MC2 at 1.0 GHz.

What has changed on Helio G88 includes support to 90Hz at 1080p+ including both OLED and LCD panels. The storage tech, RAM, video recording capability, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE modem remains the same at 1080@60fps, v5.0, 802.11ac, and Cat 7 respectively. The max cam resolution has been upgraded from 48 (on Helio G85) to 64MP on Helio G88.

According to the information available, both the newest chipsets are upgraded to support dual-SIM operation with VoLTE and HyperEngine 2.0 Lite. The higher G96 the chipset supports both 3DNR and MFNR noise reduction on-board.

Both chipsets are engineered to deliver excellent photography and display performance on upcoming generations of smartphones.
