OnePlus TV will get three years of Android TV updates, says Pete Lau

In an extensive and elaborate post on OnePlus Forums, Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, gave out a key detail about the upcoming OnePlus TV scheduled to launch in India first probably on September 26 on the same day as OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro. OnePlus TV will officially run on Android TV operating system and will be backed by three years of Android updates, something which no other smart TV has on offer at this point which makes OnePlus the first to do so.

The post states Pete saying that they did a comparison with various operating systems for their upcoming OnePlus TV and finally, settled for Android TV OS as it is the best and most powerful OS at the moment with tonnes of features, functionality, support to hundreds of apps and services and more.

He added that how OnePlus 7 Pro released earlier this year offered an advanced 90Hz display with flawless and smooth scroll and transitions, their OnePlus TV is just as fast and smooth and thus, Android TV will be the best option. Furthermore, OnePlus TV is the first step for the Chinese smartphone maker towards its goal to achieve OnePlus IoT ecosystem and since Android OS is the most popular operating system in smartphones and a majority of smart devices and IoT devices run on it, this will ensure that all the IoT devices that OnePlus rolls out connect to each other and especially its Android-powered smartphones.

Furthermore, OnePlus has a reputation for working their ass-off to provide the best of experience on their OnePlus smartphones. It was one of the earliest adopters to Android Pie 9 when it was released back in August 2018. With Android TV running on OnePlus TV, the tech giant will be able to work in conjunction with Google to optimize the OS for the upcoming smart TV in order to escalate user experience where it will surely take feedback from users to improve the OS as well as fix any bugs which are one of the biggest problems with smart TVs today as the bugs usually no unfixed.

OnePlus will offer 3 years of Android TV updates to all OnePlus TV users once it is officially available. A previous post by Pete showed that the device will use a 3GB RAM and will run on MediaTek MT5670 SoC with Android 9 Pie on board. Although only the 55” QLED variant has been officially teased yet, reports suggest that OnePlus TV will have screen sizes from 45” to a colossal 75” although the confirmed is yet awaited.
