Earlier we went through an article where Samsung teases for foldable smartphones. Noticed first by GizmoChina, Samsung Mobile’s profile image has just been on Twitter to a logo which folds to fit into the frame. The folding effect is seen on the ‘S’ letter, flipping the ‘Samsung’ text from midway. Well, Samsung couldn’t have been more direct here about what it’s teasing.

Now again, a new Bloomberg report confirms specific specs about the foldable Galaxy F (or X, depending on whom you ask). Codenamed “Winner”, the phone is getting near the final stage of its development phase before getting into production.

Google’s Patent for Foldable Smartphone

A couple a day ago, the World Intellectual Property Organisation published a Google patent dealing with a “foldable computing device”. The recently published patent, however, has less to do with foldable displays and instead focuses entirely on the single biggest hurdle preventing the practical implementation of the technology – that is, the inability of foldable displays and associated flexible PCB underpinnings to survive the numerous bending and straightening cycles experienced during the course of their lifespan.

Google hasn’t necessarily patented a technology that could be applied to a singular product as such but has instead laid down virtually all possible means to improve the durability of foldable displays. In other words, even if the company doesn’t launch a foldable smartphone of its own, it can potentially collect royalty from any brand that employs this crucial piece of technology.

But the most interesting new part of the report is that Google is working with Samsung on a special version of the Android operating system to accommodate the special features of the foldable phone. This may be indicative that Google considers this phone a strategic asset against the iPhone juggernaut. It won’t be crazy to imagine a foldable phone coming from Google itself in one year or two.
