On August 15, Samsung revealed the first-ever 5G modem developed by Samsung Electronics and named as ‘Exynos Modem 5100’ which is faster and reliable than its predecessors and it is 5G compatible. According to the press release, Exynos Modem 5100 is fully compatible with the standards set by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Samsung built the modem on a 10nm manufacturing process similar to its predecessors, however, the modems are compatible with a variety of radio technologies.

The 5G modem was tried in a wireless environment with a 5G base station and an equipment prototype with the modem embedded on it to simulated the real-world conditions where showcased its prowess over other modems prepared with the 10nm manufacturing process. When tested with sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums, Samsung found out that the modem could deliver a download speed of up to 2-gigabits per seconds and when tried under mmWave settings, the modem was 1.7 and 5 times faster than its predecessor in terms of data transfer.

The modem supports all the legacy radio access technologies right from 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE with a download speed of 1.6Gbps in the 4G settings. The Exynos modem 5100 could enable users to experience path-breaking technologies such as real-time Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous driving, Internet of Things, ultra-high resolution videos, and even holograms, and much more. Samsung is making its efforts with global network carriers to roll out 5G infrastructure around the globe.

It’s not just Samsung but Qualcomm is too developing its own 5G modem for a true 5G experience on the phone. Let’s see who’s the first to roll out 5G modem in the market.
