LG has finally launched the bug-eyed beast LG V40 ThinQ with a quadruple camera set up in the United States with the price tag of $900 for the base 6GB/64GB storage model. The new LG V40 ThinQ takes a lot of cues from its predecessor flagship smartphone LG G7 ThinQ but offers a lot more than the latter including a versatile camera system and better performance.
Talking about LG V40 ThinQ, it sports a large 6.4-inch OLED display with front and back glass sandwiched metal frame that looks brilliant in its Moroccan Blue and Aurora Black color variants available till now although glass is susceptible to scratches so good luck with that. It has a top-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6GB RAM taken from G7 ThinQ although LG has fined tuned the performance of the same which stands out when you are comparing the two smartphones side-by-side. The design is strikingly similar in both the smartphones so you might not find much of a difference.
The OLED display comes with 3120×1440 pixels resolution and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 with shows rich colors. It has a dimension of 158.8×75.7×7.6mm weighing at 169 grams which is still slightly lighter than OnePlus 6’ 177 grams. LG launched the 64GB internal storage variant in the United States with an expandable memory slot that can raise the storage to 2TB, however, LG will launch a 128GB internal storage variant in India early next month.
The device runs on Android Oreo 8.1-based LG UX which is slightly quicker, however, LG is known for its super slow software updates and this will be followed with LG V40 ThinQ as well unless LG chooses to speed up its Software Update Division recently set up. The smartphone comes backed with 3,300 mAh which is higher than G7 ThinQ yet with an OLED panel, you might need to keep a tab on the battery life and yes, LG V40 ThinQ supports wireless charging along with usual cable-backed charging.
The most outstanding change that LG has made with LG V40 ThinQ is in its camera assembly with a quadruple camera setup i.e three at the back and two at the front. The rear gets a 12MP main sensor with OIS, f/1.5, PDAG, and 1.4-micron pixel size that shoots outstanding photos. Then, it has a secondary 16MP super-wide sensor that captures a wide 107-degree image and finally, the telephone lens with 12MP sensor and 2x optical zoom makes the subject come closer to you in excellent clarity.
Then we have the front camera setup which is a dual-camera setup with an 8MP main sensor that captures a wide 80-degree image which can be extended to 90-degree using the secondary 5MP sensor. When The Verge tested out the cameras, the rear assembly is outstanding, however, telephoto sensor suffers in low-light due to its higher aperture. The camera app allows users to check out the field of view of all three rear cameras right before you can click a photo. It lets you switch between the lens or grab photos from all the cameras into one creating a zoom-in-like effect photo.
About the price, the LG V40 ThinQ comes with a price tag of $900 or Rs 66,370 for the base 6GB/64GB internal storage variant but since LG has stated earlier that it will bring down the cost of LG ThinQ smartphones below Rs 50,000, it will be a head-on competition to OnePlus 6T and others in the segment. The smartphone is expected to launch in India and other markets early next month.
