Rumors spread like wildfire in the world of tabloids, tech sites and portals. Just as Chinese OEM Huawei was gearing up for the upcoming MWC 2019 event in Barcelona on February 24, a hoarding set up at the venue caught the attention of the said-photographer and soon, the image was cited in a number of tech portals. We are talking about the supposed Huawei Mate X, the first foldable 5G smartphone from Huawei.
The image posted by @gimme2pm on Twitter showcases Huawei Mate X, a folding-in foldable smartphone from Huawei with 5G support. Note that the folding mechanism is a bit different from the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy Fold where it has an exterior display along with a larger interior display. However, Huawei Mate X takes a different approach where it has a single large display on one side which folds in half to give a smaller 6-inch-ish display while the rear section remains an affected without any displays, etc.

The hoarding suggests that it will be the world’s first foldable 5G phone as it will feature a 5G network. The rear end is speculated to have a high-end dual-camera assembly which is something Huawei is known for thanks to the bigwigs like Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P20 Pro, and the upcoming Huawei P30 Pro which recently made headlines after a company’s representative leaked a camera sample using its quad camera setup that you can read it here.
Note that before Samsung Galaxy Fold was unveiled, Huawei made a claim that it will roll out a foldable phone before the South Korean brand. Although it failed to unveil it since Samsung did the same on February 20 at its Unpacked event, Huawei may still have a lead in terms of pricing since the price quoted by Samsung rounds off at around $2,000 which is too expensive but goes in-line with the previous leaks.
Samsung promised a foldable 5G smartphone to launch, however, it did launch Galaxy Fold but with 4G support while Samsung Galaxy S10 X got 5G support which ain’t foldable. On the contrary, Huawei is about to release the world’s first ‘foldable 5G smartphone’ which is clearly Huawei’s intent based on the hoarding. The Mobile World Congress 2019 will commence on February 24 at Barcelona and will be great fun to watch new tech release one after another.
