This year has just begun and we have already seen big sharks in the ocean from makers like Samsung and more are joining the wagon soon. Gaming smartphones are a different section of smartphones engineered to put up with an impeccable gaming experience no matter what. After releasing Red Magic, Red Magic Mars, Red Magic 3 and Red Magic 3S, Nubia is back with another device hailed as Nubia Red Magic 5G. The company has deemed the phone the first to sport a display with a 144Hz refresh rate along with a slew of firsts and gaming-oriented components & features that will make it a hot selling cake.

To be honest, the Nubia Red Magic series comprises one of the well-designed smartphones and the latest to add in the portfolio is no different. The rear panel screams ‘gaming beast’ metaphorically with its humongous sized ‘X’ gradient along with a strip that runs right in the middle vertically sporting its triple camera setup, the Red Magic branding and a small logo with RGB underneath it because why not. As more and more gaming-oriented phones are getting their own signature-style RGBs as notification lights, Red Magic 5G adds another in the list of smartphones to choose from.

On the right side, you’ll find a volume rocker, two shoulders buttons, and a power button. These buttons are capacitive and aid in adrenaline-rushing games like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile and others. There’s an inlet for the cooling fan to get air at the left from which the air is expelled out of the vent on the right.

Yep, Nubia Red Magic 5G has an air-cooling system with a heat-sink chamber and an actual finger on-board that allows for rapid heat dissipation bringing down the CPU’s temperature to 18° at max. As the cooling mechanism kicks in, it dissipates the heat allowing the CPU to remain cooler, perform higher when the user is indulged in an immersive graphics-intensive gaming session. The technology also kicks in when the phone is charging at a top-speed of 55W that juices up its massive 4,500 mAh battery in merely half an hour or so.

Talking about the specs, the device has a 6.65-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels. What’s interesting is that the top and bottom bezels are tiny let alone side bezels. The display has a 144Hz refresh rate which is way faster than 120Hz panels that have started blossoming in high-end flagship devices. The device also has a 240Hz touch-sensing rate so whatever you do, it is not just fast but the transition will be buttery soft.

The device is powered with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 octa-core chipset with Snapdragon X55 modem that gives it 5G capabilities. It further has 8 to 16GB of RAM and comes with a peak UFS 3.0 storage system. Red Magic 5G starts at 128GB of internal storage and maxes out at 256GB which might be a bit of concern for those users who want more storage and I don’t know why.

Red Magic 5G runs on the RedMagicOS based on Android 10. It packs in a triple camera setup at the back which includes a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary cam, 8MP ultra-wide secondary cam, and a 2MP macro shooter. The primary module has a red ring around it while the secondary cam gets a hexagonal-shaped bump that makes it stand different from others no doubt.

About the pricing & availability, the device will be available probably on March 19 as per the scheduled first sales in China while a wider global release will take place in April. The device is available in Cyber Neo, Mars Red, and Black color variant and there’s a transparent edition as well. The 8/128GB is available at CNY3,799 ($540), 12/128GB at CNY4,099 ($585), 12/256GB variant will be available at CNY4,399 ($625) and finally, the largest variant 16GB/256GB will be available at CNY4,999 ($712). The Transparent Edition will be priced almost $15 higher than colored variants.
