Samsung is all set to unveil its flagship Galaxy Note 20 series of smartphones on August 5th, during the online Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event. Seems like this could be the last flagship from the company which comes charger bundled inside the box. Yes, you read it right! Samsung is following Apple’s footsteps and is planning to ship its upcoming flagships without chargers.
To recall, last month, a report from Barclays claimed that the Cupertino-based tech giant may not include the EarPods and the charger inside the box with its upcoming iPhones. When the rumors emerged that Apple would not bundle a charger, most of the tech enthusiasts guessed that this would be a similar case with the upcoming Android devices and it turns out that they were right. According to ETNews, Samsung is discussing plans to stop budling the chargers from a few smartphone boxes with its extensive network of suppliers.
Although this might not be a huge deal for some of the consumers, this move will obviously break a tradition, just like bundling the earphones did! The South Korean giant’s reasons behind this whole “not including” is pretty much as Apple’s. Samsung ships millions of smartphones around the globe every year and removing the chargers from the boxes will save Samsung a lot of money. Samsung could possibly also cut-down the prices of its smartphones, just like Apple might do with its iPhone 12 series of devices. According to reports, Apple iPhone 12 series will start at around USD 549, roughly Rs. 42,000 this time around making it the cheapest Apple flagship in years.
Samsung believes that it has supplied the consumers with more than enough chargers over the past few years, meaning most of the users will no longer need a new charger. There are also environmental benefits of not shipping millions of chargers that will end up in tons of electronic waste. Now this means if you still need a charger after buying a new device, Samsung has its own fast chargers that you can buy from online and offline retailers. Yes, buying a charger everything you buy a phone might not be the right thing to do, but, as mentioned earlier, it could possibly bring down the prices of the devices.
One can still argue the fact that ditching the chargers in the boxes is just another trick by manufacturers to make more cash by selling the accessories like wireless chargers and a few bricks. According to Android Authority, excluding the charger could further normalize the practice of charging excessive fees for the fundamental accessories. It possibly won’t commence to noticeably cheaper phone prices either, just more expensive power adapters! Now that the industry heads might start the trend of not including the power bricks inside the box, I can only see the smartphone manufacturers fancy and adopt this, meaning, just like the earphones exclusion, we might also get used to the charger exclusion in the future.
