Samsung never released the Fan Edition for the Galaxy S22 series due to semiconductor shortage. The exhilarating demand for Galaxy S22 Ultra pushed it even further. Cut to now, citing The Elec report, the South Korean giant is expected to launch Galaxy S23 FE sometime in August or September this year. As the source of the update is a reputed Korean publication, we have all reasons to believe that’s the case.
Samsung rolled out Galaxy S20 FE which instantly became a hit as a flagship phone with affordable pricing. Launched in mid-October, more than 10 million units were sold by the time 2021 rolled up.
The Galaxy S21 FE didn’t receive the same reception because it had limited availability in only Europe and the United States. That’s probably one of the reasons why Galaxy S22 FE never formulated as the Korean giant decided to skip it citing semiconductor shortage and other reasons.
It is unclear whether Galaxy S22 FE will ever see the light of day. Samsung Electronics might let go of the Galaxy A73 successor dubbed Galaxy A74 this year. Instead, it could get the Galaxy S23 FE afloat in more markets than before. The Galaxy S23 FE will likely get a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC although we aren’t aware of the details as of now.
The Elec further mentions that Samsung is looking forward to discontinuing the A7 series as it concerns mutual cannibalization between other Galaxy devices and the low product sales adding to the frenzy.
According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung led the Indian smartphone market with a market share of 20% in Q4 2022 by volume. It has been leading the top ranks along with Xiaomi for quite some time now. On the global front, Apple led the pack with a 23% market share in Q4 2022 while Samsung did 19% in Q4 2022. Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi have been leading the top three ranks over the past couple of quarters.
Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Specifications
Unfortunately, we don’t have any update on the specifications for S23 FE. We do know that either Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC could power the device. For reference, the Galaxy S21 FE (the predecessor) sported an Exynos 2100 SoC under the hood. The predecessor had a 6.4” FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 120Hz panel and a Gorilla Glass Victus on top.
It houses up to 25GB UFS 3.1 storage and 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and Android 13-flanked OneUI out-of-the-box. There’s a triple rear camera at the back housing a 12MP primary, 12MP ultrawide, and an 8MP telephoto shooter. A 32MP shooter is housed at the front for selfies. Finally, we have a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging tech.
The Galaxy S21 FE made some compromises over features and functionalities to bring down the pricing. Galaxy S23 FE is likely to mimic the same strategy and will reach out to more markets than before to grab a larger share by offering an affordable pricing.
