Samsung’s previous-gen foldable device, i.e., Galaxy Z Fold 2 was quite a success if we compare it with its predecessors.  Foldable devices are still in their development and experimenting phase. Different companies are experimenting with distinct designs and tech to come with a consumer-friendly and usable device. Now, the latest reports are saying that Samsung is already working on the concepts of the next-gen of their foldable smartphones, i.e., Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The latest reports tell us that there could be a hinged display that can be used for vital information like notifications, time, etc. This is basically an RGB Led strip that would get swallowed by the backside of the smartphone. Back in March 2019, Samsung filed a patent for an ‘Electronic device including indicator’, which was later published by the world intellectual property Organization (WIPO) on October 1, 2020. The documentation, spotted and illustrated by Dutch outlet LetsGoDigital, specifically describes the hinge screen as an LED panel.

The patent shows the Galaxy Z Fold with an indicator within the hinge featuring LED light elements and an almost translucent cover. This LED light indicator could alright be used for notifications or the aim of the indicator would be to notify the user of notifications, or incoming calls or messages. However, a word of caution before we get excited about this feature. like all patents, this feature might not make it to the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

However, it’s currently too early to inform if this concept will ever see the sunshine of day, or which devices will sport it. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 seems to be the foremost likely candidate, but it’s probably almost a year away at the time of writing. Other features we’d see therein phone include an improved UTG (ultra-thin glass) implementation in partnership with Corning and S Pen stylus support. Rumors also point at an in-display selfie camera.

Whether Samsung will actually integrate this indicator within the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3 remains unknown. it’s clear that Samsung is constant to explore new possibilities to further improve the foldable smartphone and thus take the user experience to a good higher level.

Samsung also seems to be investigating the likelihood of creating upcoming folding phones compatible with the S Pen. With this stylus pen, the Galaxy Note series has been ready to distinguish itself from other smartphone models for years. Especially with an outsized display device like the Z Fold 2, the S Pen can deliver a crucial added value.
