Today marks the day when the Honor Magic9 series finally rolls out with three offerings, i.e., Magic9, Magic9 Super, and Magic9 Pro Max, with impressive specs on board, including the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 SoC. Here’s our take on the trio.
Honor Magic9 & Magic9 Super get Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 & a 200MP rear camera
Well, for starters, both the standard Magic9 and Super have a few things in common. Both the phones are powered by last year’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC with Adreno 840 GPU, up to 16GB RAM, 1TB of storage, and Android 17-based MagicOS 11 out-of-the-box with access to seven major Android upgrades.
Honor Magic9 has a 6.37” OLED 1B 1236x2664px panel with 461ppi density, a 120Hz display with 2000 nits of high brightness and 10,000 nits of peak local brightness. On the other hand, Magic9 Super offers similar display specs but with a large panel at 6.8” 1280x2788px and 450ppi density. Both displays are at a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
Magic9 and Magic9 Super share two of the three rear cameras, i.e., a 200MP primary camera with OIS and a 200MP periscope telephoto with 3-3.5x optical zoom. The tertiary cam on the vanilla Magic9 is a 50MP ultrawide camera, while the Magic9 Super picks up a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera. The rear camera is capable of recording video up to 4K res at 120fps, with gyro-EIS and HDR.
Finally, we have the front cam of 55MP HDR multi-aspect on the vanilla and a 50MP wide-angle HDR cam on the Super. Both the phones arrive with an ARRI partnership that ensures improved photography and videography on the trio. There’s an Honor H1 imaging chip on-board that delivers 18.8 TOPS/watt of AI performance on-board, capable of reducing image noise, etc.
On the battery front, we have an 8,000 mAh battery on the vanilla Magic9, while the Super Edition yanks it up to 11,000 mAh Si/C. Both are capable of wired charging at 80W, wireless charging at 50W, and reverse wired charging at 27W.
On the pricing part, Honor Magic9 arrives in China with a base 12G/256GB at CNY 4,999 ($745) and goes up to CNY 6,999 for the top-of-the-line 16GB+1TB variant.
When it comes to Honor Magic9 Super Edition pricing, the Chinese market retails the phone at CNY 4,499 for the base 12/256GB variant. There’s a higher 12/512GB at CNY 4,999, and finally, we have 16/512GB at CNY 5,499. There’s a G200 teleconverter that works with the Super Edition just like the Pro Max. Color options on both the models include Olive Green, Yellow, White, and Black.
Honor Magic9 Pro Max brings Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 SoC
Honor Magic9 Pro Max doesn’t fail to impress you with its top-tier specs on board. It brings the first-ever 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 SoC on an Honor phone, paired with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB UFS 4.1 storage. It has an Android 17-based MagicOS 11 out-of-the-box with up to 7 major OS upgrades.
At the front, you are greeted by a 6.8” LTPO OLED 1320×2868 px panel with support for a variable 1-120Hz refresh rate. The display has a global peak brightness of 2,000 nits with a local peak brightness going all the way to 10,000 nits. The Chinese manufacturer mentions an updated NanoCrystal Shield on its display that prevents scratches, while an anti-reflective coating takes care of the glare.
Honor positions Magic9 Pro Max as a pro-grade video camera thanks to its partnership with German camera maker ARRI. The partnership brings a well-calibrated 200MP 23nm equivalent 1/1.28” primary sensor, a secondary 200MP 85mm equivalent telephoto cam with a 1/1.4” sensor with 3.7x optical zoom, and finally, a third 12mm equivalent 50MP ultrawide shooter.
Honor mentions the primary and telephoto lenses use CIPA 8.0 gimbal-level stabilization. Plus, all three cameras have ARRI color profiles. Plus, we have ARRI LogC3 Curve video recording plus 10-bit color depth and ARRI’s Wide Gamut 3 color space.
The Magic9 Pro Max also offers an optional teleconverter with a 500mm lens attached that converts the phone into a handheld camera with options to add grips, LED flashes, and microphones using a SmallRig camera cage.
Pricing and availability
Talking about Honor Magic9 Pro Max pricing, the phone starts at CNY 6,499 for the base 12/256GB and tops out at CNY 8,499 for its max 16GB/1TB variant; that’s equivalent to $968 and $1,266, respectively. On the colorways, we have three options to choose from: Moss Green, Glacier Silver, and Shadow Black.
Note that the device is available in China; however, its availability for global regions is not out yet.
