The OnePlus 16 India launch may not be happening at all. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems the OnePlus 16 might never make it to India. In fact, it might never see the light of day outside China, making it a China-exclusive phone in the process. We could see a slightly less powerful OnePlus 16R instead; more on that in this story.
OnePlus 16 India launch reportedly skipped
According to tipster Yogesh Brar, OnePlus is looking forward to a change in its flagship strategy for India. With that being said, the upcoming OnePlus 16 may become the first casualty, as the phone may not arrive in India. The Chinese smartphone maker is already out of Europe and North America, which means OP16 will be launched as a China-only device.
Do note that this is nothing new for Chinese smartphone makers. Xiaomi and OnePlus have been doing exclusive launches for years. Except this time, it is the upcoming top-of-the-line flagship phone taking the hit. On the flip side, we could see the OnePlus 16R christened as the top model of the country.
The OnePlus R-series is usually a rebranded version of China-exclusive phones with bigger batteries. For instance, the OnePlus 13R was a rebranded OnePlus Ace 5, while the OnePlus 15R was an Ace 6T.
This means OnePlus 16R could be an Ace 7 series smartphone, possibly powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (2025) or a slightly watered-down version of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 (that carries ‘s’ as a suffix, i.e., Snapdragon 8s Elite 6).
OnePlus 16R specs at a glance
Unfortunately, there’s no Ace 7 series phone launched in China so far, which means we don’t have a comparison to make. Usually, the OnePlus R-series carries a watered-down SoC of the flagship cadre plus a larger battery than the primary flagship counterpart.
The current OnePlus Ace 6 series packs in Dimensity 9500 (Ace 6 Ultra), Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 (Ace 6T), and Snapdragon 8 Elite (Ace 6). This could be an indication of what the Ace 7 series will pick up with incremental uupdates,and, in turn, the rebranded OnePlus 16R will carry the same chipset.
For now, I would like things with a pinch of salt, as there’s no official confirmation from the Chinese maker yet. It seems OnePlus wants Oppo to make the most of India as one of the biggest smartphone makers out there.
