For now, the top end processor from Qualcomm is the Snapdragon 835 that is an insanely powerful chipset and can handle anything you throw at it. Nevertheless, its successor should be out within a couple of months. If that wasn’t enough, the LinkedIn profiles of some Qualcomm employees even suggests the flagship processor that would only be seeing the light of day by 2019.
The Android smartphone world is depended heavily on Qualcomm for its Snapdragon lineup of processors. Being the most important part of a phone and catering such a large customer base, keeping track of the development of Snapdragon processors becomes even more important.
Some of the similar reports appeared back in October that confirmed the name Snapdragon 845 for the upcoming processor. The newer set of information comes from the LinkedIn profile of a senior staff engineer at Qualcomm. The employee’s description mentions Snapdragon 845 name along with the 10nm/7nm manufacturing process mentioned for Snapdragon processors.
Another employee’s profile mentions that names Snapdragon 855, 840, and 830, along with few other mid-range processors that are already out in the market. The Snapdragon 830 might not have made it as the Snapdragon 835 is already out. Snapdragon 840 is a name that we’ve heard earlier too in July when a Geekbench listing possibly revealed the upcoming Galaxy S9. The Snapdragon 845 also made an appearance alongside.
While we’re expecting the Snapdragon 845 to be announced by the next month, this profile mentions the Snapdragon 855. Continuing the usual upgrade cycle, the Snapdragon 855 should be out by the end of 2018 and the first devices sporting the processor should start shipping early 2019. As the first profile mentions, it should be made using the 7nm process, making it even more efficient. The Snapdragon 845 will be manufactured using the 10nm process.
These profiles do give us an idea of Qualcomm’s roadmap at least for the flagship products. They are Qualcomm employees which itself makes them a credible source of this piece of information. Whatever the company might end up calling them, we now know what to expect from the 2019 high-end Snapdragon processor.
