YouTube Premium Lite plan rolls out in India

Earlier today, we got an update that YouTube is rolling out a Premium Lite plan in India. There’s already a Premium plan in the country, and this is literally the watered-down version, and thus, the name ‘Premium Lite’. Unlike the previous, Premium Lite supports certain types of ads, fewer of them compared to the free YouTube subscription.

What does the Premium Lite plan offer?

YouTube is using wishy-washy language when discerning what the new Premium Lite tier brings on board. For starters, the plan that costs ₹89/month in India says most videos are ad-free. It mentions some categories such as gaming, beauty, fashion, news, and more while leaving the vagueness to the benefit of doubt. This is deliberately done so that YouTube can adjust the frequency and category of ads shown as it pleases.

The second difference between the ₹149/month Premium and ₹89/month Premium Lite plan is that it doesn’t include YouTube Music. Moreover, there are no downloads and background playback supported on the Lite tier. This is perhaps what sets the premium lite apart from the all-powerful premium and the powerless free subscription tier.

Although India is the latest entrant, it’s not the only one. Other countries where the YouTube Premium Lite plan is available are Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States.
