- WhatsApp seems to be working on a premium subscription tier dubbed as WhatsApp Plus.
- This will bring 20+ pinned chats, 14 app icons and customizations, and a tonne of exclusive stickers an interactive messaging elements on-board.
- The tier is under the works across iOS and Android clients will no release dates available. In fact, there's no beta version available as of now.
WhatsApp could soon undergo a massive update, headlining as a subscription model. Dubbed as “WhatsApp Plus,” the tier—or it could be a standalone app—offers access to a few exclusive features only available for paid users, and that’s a biggie.
WhatsApp Plus adds exclusive stickers, features, pinned chats & more
According to the folks at WABetaInfo, the instant messaging app is working on a premium subscription plan called “WhatsApp Plus.” It brings access to 14 new app icons that users can customize on their own.
There’s customization in terms of themes and accent colors as well. My guess is that this is probably a subscription tier instead of an app, given there’s already a “WhatsApp Plus” app in the market that had a few additional features compared to the usual WhatsApp that we use, although it wasn’t an official version but rather a mod.
Circling back to the incoming WhatsApp Plus (the paid tier), the app will bring access to pin up to 20 chats at once. For context, the current WhatsApp version allows users up to 3 pinned chats. Why do you think this is a path-breaking feature, you ask? Well, it is because as a user, you can simply pin important chats if you are a power user. This helps you segregate important chats from the clutter of other chats out there. Makes sense, right?
Moving forward, we have exclusive stickers only available to WhatsApp Plus users. There will be distinctive ringtones available that separate WhatsApp calls from other calls as well. As we go forward, WhatsApp will continue to add more features to the subscription tier.
Note that the version is currently in the works across both iOS and Android clients. It is still too early to comment on when it will arrive. However, it is safe to say that whatever you and I use on WhatsApp now will remain free for use forever. A separate subscription tier allows WhatsApp to keep the monetization stance clear while still allowing mass users on their free platform. For context, there are over 3 billion WhatsApp users worldwide at the time of writing this.
