- BGMI LITE gets a new name as KRAFTON makes a surprising move.
- BGMI Air crosses a major milestone ahead of its India launch.
- A lighter battle royale experience is on the way, with more details still under wraps.
After renaming PUBG Mobile Light to PUBG Mobile Flash, KRAFTON has now renamed the India-specific battle royale game, previously announced as BGMI LITE, to BGMI Air. Well, this is something that’s confusing some gaming enthusiasts, questioning why they needed to make such a move, while the game publisher has something else to say.
I do understand the concern raised by users trying to figure out why renaming was needed. First, we heard about the PUBG Mobile Light and BGMI LITE, and now we have a different name, still clearly suggesting a lightweight-focused version. We will break down the story for you to help you better understand why this decision was made.
BGMI LIGHT is now BGMI Air—different name, same experience
First things first, the announcement comes as the game surpassed 10 million pre-registrations on the Google Play Store. For your information, the pre-registrations for BGMI LIGHT, which is now BGMI Air, began on August 25 for Android users. Surprisingly, the game achieved this milestone in less than two months, noting that today is October 15, 2026.

Now, according to KRAFTON India, BGMI AIr is intended to offer the core Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) experience in a more compact package. As a result, players using a low-end or entry-level device will be able to experience the battle royale without having to compromise. The publisher notes BGMI Air is meant to reduce hardware and storage requirements while offering the core gameplay experience compared to the original BGMI.
One of the most important details confirmed for BGMI Air is its initial download size, which is about 1GB. Players wanting to play games despite having low storage on their device can download it even if they have 1GB+ empty storage. But that’s not something I would recommend; you should keep a little more empty space to play the game smoothly, because you may use some storage to download the in-game package.
BGMI Air will have a separate game client
In addition to the above-mentioned announcement, KRAFTON also clarified that the Air version will function as an independent game client. Current BGMI players are not required to transfer their accounts or data to start playing the lightweight version.
In simple words, players can easily access BGMI Air without migrating or compromising their original BGMI accounts or data. The publisher said it will share further details about account integration, progress, and other potential differences between the two games closer to the launch.

BGMI Air pre-registrations and open beta program
As we have shared already, the pre-registrations for BGMI Air are already live on the Google Play Store. Initially, it started on August 25, 2026, and is currently limited to Android devices. Many of you might be wondering, what about iOS? Well, its availability for iOS devices remains to be known. If you are an iOS user, let us know in the comments if you are looking forward to BGMI AIr.
Moreover, KRAFTON is planning to release an open beta ahead of public or general release to validate technical stability and gather feedback from players. Using the feedback, it will help the publisher to fix identified or known issues.
Finally, KRAFTON has scheduled BGMI Air for launch in India later this year. However, the exact date remains to be confirmed.
