OnePlus, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer that managed to take the market for a spin with their original “Flagship Killer” has now triumphantly achieved three generations of their smartphone lineup: OnePlus One, OnePlus 2, OnePlus 3, and OnePlus 3T – the addition that superseded. Now, the brand is all set to proclaim the fourth in the queue:  The OnePlus 5, and yes, not the 4, since the number is deemed ill-fated in China. The OnePlus 3T brought an upgraded version of the 3 to the table. However, the mystery remains — why did OnePlus release a follow-up device? Was it to compete and keep up with the market as new devices that debuted afterward? Or, was it to fill up the rift between the OnePlus 3 and the alleged upcoming OnePlus 5?

The market is already flooded with numerous leaks about the OnePlus 5, recently India Today discovered a leaked render. However, after Digit’s analysis (no longer accessible), the leaked renders turned out to have a plentitude of significant errors that regarded it as sketchy and unreliable; therefore we chose not to publish a word about it. Subsequently, what we get to see today, can again be called dubious at best. However, we (TrueTech) were contacted by an anonymous leaker who has been in touch with us for a while. The leaker today furnished us with a few sample photographs taken using the Chinese smartphone manufacturer’s upcoming handset the OnePlus 5. The leaker has been turning out to be very efficient at his work, which can be derived from the past leaks he has provided to us: LG G5 caught in the wild and CM121 official roll-out dates for OnePlus One, which were close to accurate. Therefore, we opted to issue a story online and open it to the public for further commentary. Professionals, individuals and other media outlets, please feel free to operate over the leaked assets and validate the authenticity of the images.

Before proceeding any further, it is necessary to reiterate that we do not endorse or provide any legitimacy to the following leaked assets in any manner. But one factor that validates the fact that these images originate from a OnePlus 5 is the metadata or the EXIF info. The image is taken using a OnePlus device, and the model number present on the metadata is A5000, again hinting it at being a OnePlus 5. Additionally, the image holds latitudes and longitudes of Shenzen, China, where the device is most probably being tested. However, it is not tough to supplement or take a niblet off of this data, it is quite effortless to alter it. All the leaked pictures can be previewed below, and the full resolution pictures can be download in a single zip file from here or here. Below the preview of the images, you can unearth our complete breakdown of them. Nevertheless, since I hold not more than a tiny amount of knowledge about cameras, photographs, and the corresponding analysis, I invited my friend Sagar from a YouTube channel and website called TecWorkz to examine the pictures, and their metadata or the EXIF info along with me. He has come up with a thorough critique on the photos as well.

On these images, Sagar explains to us that without comparing the shots with other devices, it is rather challenging to decipher the precise color reproduction and other underlying factors. Regardless of that, he mentions that there is indeed a plethora of detail and contrast in the images since they are apparently taken in decent lighting conditions. Other than that, he was likewise able to perceive a noticeable amount of depth comprehension, which is why he believes that the smartphone might pack a dual camera setup, with both sensors having an equal megapixel count (most probably 16-megapixel), howbeit, one being wider to cover more depth information. On top of that, basing his next assertion on Image 2, he believes that software has been assisting in rendering depth perception in the image, as the blur in the processing of Image 2 seems a tad bit off.

Keeping all that aside, the OnePlus 5 is said to arrive with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset accompanied by an 8GB RAM, which sounds overkill for a smartphone. On the display end, the OnePlus 3T successor is said to feature a QHD AMOLED 5.5-inch screen. The phone will be backed by a 4,000mAh battery capacity and will run OxygenOS on top of Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Currently, Samsung holds exclusive usage rights for the Snapdragon 835, as they have supported Qualcomm significantly to build this chipset, however, OnePlus should be able to elude the barrier in the months to come.
