The Apple Mac Pro got really popular when it was released in December 2013, simply because it was the most powerful Mac machine available and well, the design was especially unique and loved by many. However, that was it for the Mac Pro; they didn’t bother announcing a newer, more up to date model. A lot of people have been disappointed with Apple for doing this, including big creators like Marques Brownlee, who’s been constantly talking about how he’d wish to get a new Mac Pro and I guess they’ve heard his prayers, and of course a lot of others’ too.
Phil Schiller, senior VP of worldwide marketing stated, “We’re in the process of completely rethinking the Mac Pro”. As of reports from Mashable, Apple didn’t have any sketches or prototypes to show off, but they did share its plans to refresh their desktop lineup.
Furthermore, the senior VP of software engineering, Craig Federighi addressed the Pro as “vintage.” He also talked about how the design struggled to win over the hearts of Pro consumers.
The Mac Pro, the current vintage that we introduced, we wanted to do something bold and different. In retrospect, it didn’t well suit some of the people we wanted to reach.
While Apple obviously didn’t spill out many details about the upcoming Mac Pro, the executives did mention that the new device will be targeted to a wider audience. Also, one thing that Schiller said you should not expect is a touchscreen, like on the Microsoft Surface studio.
Apple also gave some updates about spec bumps for existing Mac Pros:
The entry-level Mac Pro, which starts at $2,999, will now come with a six-core Xeon processor, instead of four and dual Fire Pro D500 GPUs (instead of D300). The high-end, $3,999, will offer 8 cores and jump from dual D500 graphics cards to a pair of D700 GPUs.
All this sounds good, but it seems like you’ll have to wait till 2018 to see the new Mac Pro, while the update for the iMac will be available probably by the end of this year.
