At the International Consumer Electronics Show in Shanghai, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei announced a partnership with Volkswagen to bring connectivity to cars. The two company’s showed us a suite of apps that will allow Huawei smartphones users to safely connect their smartphone to the build-in infotainment systems mounted in Volkswagen vehicles. The suite includes apps for navigation, text messaging, music and for making phone calls.
For managing all the information real-time, Huawei uses MirrorLink to seamlessly connect devices to the infotainment systems. MirrorLink is used to bring instant information from the device to the screen in the car. The MirrorLink is getting bigger every day, but is hasn’t been introduced in the US.
This isn’t the only partnership with Volkswagen, they also partnered up with Google to use Android Auto. Which has begun to roll out in the US, so it is still unclear if the MirrorLink system will be used in the US. The only vehicle’s that are using MirrorLink with Huawei’s suite of safety apps are the Volkswagen Lamando and the Golf 7, both cars are still produced in China. But, I need to say that it is good to see that more manufacturers are taking smartphone / car connectivity seriously.
