Citing Counterpoint Research’s Market Pulse Service report, it is reported that the global smartphone market sales have dipped 4% Month-on-Month (MoM) with a figure of 96 million units in May 2022. To compare the same, this is the second decline in sales in ten years and the second one after the pandemic hit the world back in 2020 when the world saw a decline in sales below the 70 millionth mark.
Global smartphone market sales take a dip
According to Counterpoint Research’s MPS report, the all-time high in terms of smartphone sales was recorded back in December 2016 when the figure crossed the 150 million mark. Since then, the graph has been on the positive side month-on-month (MoM) only to fall back in May 2020 during the pandemic.
The sales figures started to rise MoM post the pandemic low, however, it has now dipped to 96 million units as of May 2022 owing to several reasons. The ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine, factories shutting down in China forcing lower units manufacturing, and rising inflation levels are some of the reasons for delivering lower smartphone demands.
This will further cause a stock pile-up where Samsung is already facing similar issues after it lowered projected units to sell this year. However, Counterpoint Research does mention that the supply chain is expected to normalize in the second half of this year where Chinese factories will operate to their full potential as well.
As of now, several flagship phones are awaited this year including the Apple iPhone 14 series, and the new Samsung Galaxy Fold series among a tonne of other devices from OEMs across the entry to flagship-cadre that will arrive this year possibly spiking smartphone demand as a result.
