While we all know that Gmail is the premier service from Google for sending and receiving emails, we have seen that Google has made the service much more than that. Even though Gmail has remained as an email service provider, integration of other Google services has meant that it is competing with similar services in the market.
The closest we can think of right now is Slack which is massively popular in the North American markets. Now, Google has officially announced that a major redesign is coming to Gmail which will make it work more like Slack.
This is because Gmail is getting integration of services such as Google Chat, Google Rooms as well as Google Meet which means chat, video conferencing and other work-related tools will soon be all at one place.
However, it does look like this redesign for Gmail will be limited to GSuite users for the time being. It also makes sense that GSuite users will get this functionality since it is meant for work users as well. As from the video, we can see that Gmail redesign will be available for both desktop users as well as on the mobile.
In the announcement blog post, the company mentions that with the redesign, its “aim is to deepen the integration between, it’s three major pillars of communication: email, chat, and video”. Google also says that “the updates will initially only be available as a preview for G Suite users starting later this week, and will roll out widely to G Suite users for the end of the year. There’s no word yet on when or if similar features will come to the consumer version of Gmail”.
While this does look like clumsy and chaotic looking at multiple services on your Gmail homepage rather than focusing on your email, there are people out there who need this integration and they are the ones who will benefit from it the most.
