Google has caught us off guard yet again with its latest announcement: the Pixel 8a’s debut. This mid-range marvel shares a bunch of features with its pricier siblings, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, including a bundle of Google AI products.

The Pixel 8a’s Initial Software Update Comes with an AI Wallpaper Generator

Among these is the much-talked-about AI wallpaper generator, previously reserved for the Pixel 8 series. But here’s the kicker, Pixel 8a owners need not feel left out. Android Authority reports that in the upcoming software update, Google has graciously decided to bestow upon them the same AI wallpaper generator.

Introduced at last year’s I/O event, the AI wallpaper generator employs the wonders of generative AI to craft unique wallpapers based on your preferences. Due to the high processing overhead, Google’s AI wallpaper app does not produce images directly on the device.

Rather, it transfers creating images to Google’s cloud servers. The software can theoretically run on devices other than the Pixel 8 series since the image generation is managed in the cloud. Google chose to limit the app’s availability to its flagship Pixel 8 lineup for marketing purposes, but it has given Samsung a customized version of the app for the Galaxy S24 series.

The Pixel 8a will support the same AI wallpaper app as the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, though it might not work with the device’s launch firmware. Upon offering a few tech reviewers a demo of the Pixel 8a, it preloaded the device with an Android 14-based software release that had a build number of UD2A.231020.001. Now, the forthcoming software update (version UD2A.240505.001.B1) not only beefs up security but also brings along the much-anticipated AI wallpaper functionality.

Accessing the AI Wallpaper Generator

Simply long-press on an empty spot on your home screen, select “Wallpaper & style,” and then tap “More wallpapers.” There, you’ll find the AI wallpaper option.

And here’s something to cheer about, by extending this feature to the Pixel 8a, Google is making top-notch AI technology more accessible than ever. Here’s hoping they continue this trend with future Tensor-powered Pixel devices.
