Oppo filed for a patent for smartphone designs with rear displays back in April 2021 and just a few days ago, it received the patent. The folks at LetsGoDigital got their hands on the patent giving three potential smartphone designs with a rear display or secondary displays attached to the camera island.

The first design shows a circular camera bump with four cameras and a small circular display in the middle. There’s another sketch with a similar design although the rear display within the camera bump is rectangular. Finally, there’s a dual-camera setup with a huge-sized camera bump that Oppo has patented as of now.

Oppo isn’t the first company to work around implementing a secondary display because there are a bunch of models available today that can do it. Xiaomi has a phone with dual displays, Vivo NEX Dual Display has two completely full-sized displays on either side of the chassis, while foldable phones from Huawei, Samsung, and Oppo have showcased what the display tech is heading towards in the future.

Although it is unclear if these designs are a part of Oppo’s upcoming flagship Find X5 series or not, the designs look enticing. There’s a possibility that Oppo gained the patent from WIPO to curb other OEMs from using similar designs in the future.

For the uninitiated, this isn’t something new in the tech industry as companies file patents at a lightning speed to curb its competitor from using the same design. Oppo Find X5 series is slated to arrive in March 2022 so one of the designs may arrive in the X5 series as well although take it with a pinch of salt.
