At the Exynos 2100 unveil on January 11, Samsung confirmed that the South Korean giant is in the works with AMD on a massive collaboration over a next-gen RDNA GPU-based chipset. It is likely to arrive in Samsung smartphones sometime in early 2022.
In June 2019, Samsung made headlines as it announced its partnership with chipmaker AMD over the licensing and integration of its RDNA GPU architecture with its upcoming chipsets. Now it is confirmed that we can expect that the RNDA-power Exynos chipset will arrive as a successor to Exynos 2100 likely next year. As per the timeline that Samsung follows, it releases a single flagship chipset every year. Now that we have Exynos 2100 for 2021 flagship devices, it is highly unlikely that we will get to see the new chip in action.
As per the estimated timeline, the next-gen Exynos chipset with AMD’s RNDA GPU architecture will undergo production by the end of this year. With that, we should get the first batch of flagship devices in early 2021 and that is when the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 will arrive next year i.e. in 2022. The folks at GSMArena did mention that Samsung could use the next-gen chipset with Galaxy Z Fold3 as well which should arrive as early as later this year but let’s say it seems a bit too optimistic given the fact that Samsung doesn’t release two flagship chipsets in a year.
Note that the AMD-Samsung collaboration does mention that both the parties will produce “complementary products”. This means Samsung can use it on its smartphones and tablets, however, it cannot develop and manufacture its chipsets based on AMD’s technology that will play as a direct competition to AMD.
