Samsung Plans Solid-State Batteries for Wearables, Smartphones to Follow Later

Samsung products could soon switch to solid-state batteries on the wearable devices. This comes from one of the top execs at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and it will instantly deliver the freedom to design batteries in varied shapes and offer higher energy density. However, these batteries won’t make it to smartphones for at least a few years, to the best of our knowledge.

Samsung Wearables to Get Solid-State Batteries

According to the report by Money Today (South Korea), Samsung is working on integrating its wearable line of devices with solid-state batteries. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolytes, these are made using solid electrolytes, giving them much better resistance to the risk of fire. Moreover, it also assists Samsung in designing batteries and devices in weird shapes, giving it complete freedom over liquid-based batteries.

As per the timeline, Samsung could introduce solid-state batteries on its Galaxy Ring as early as the fourth quarter of this year. This is probably due to slumping sales, which is why the South Korean giant wants to introduce the new tech (also called the ‘dream battery’) on the ring to boost its sales. Moreover, we could see Galaxy Ring 2 or 3 getting their hands on solid-state batteries if the timeline is on point. 

However, it also means increased prices on these wearable devices. For instance, solid-state batteries, albeit with their high-density performance, are quite expensive. Sulfide-based solid electrolyte batteries cost around $1,500 to $2,000 per kg to produce, raising questions on how Samsung could make its wearable tech feasible.

It’s not just the Galaxy Ring, but we will see Samsung Galaxy TWS earbuds making it to the scene as well. Touted to roll out around the fourth quarter of 2026, you can expect the batteries to have higher performance at 400Wh/L compared to the current-gen solid-state ones which are at 200Wh/L.

Finally, we have the Samsung Galaxy Watch series joining the wagon sometime in the fourth quarter of 2027 with the new battery tech on board. It remains to be seen how Samsung will manage the cost of production and its sales once these devices are actually out. 

The South Korean giant is set to set up facilities to manufacture these solid-state batteries by the end of this year at the latest.
