After waiting for quite a while, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 made its high-octane debut at the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 26 where we got to see the next-gen of foldable devices that fold flat. Albeit a refinement over the predecessor and not an overhaul, Galaxy Z Fold5 still brings a lot to the table.

The One-Up Design: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5

Contrary to the previous Galaxy Z Fold4, the next-gen Z Fold5 folds fully flat without leaving any space in between. This is all thanks to Samsung’s new hinge design dubbed Flex Hinge. It further improves Samsung’s Flex Mode allowing users to simply keep the phone at any angle they want and get their job done.

Moving on, we have the phone’s weight which is 10g lighter and it has a thinner profile than its predecessor all thanks to the flat folding hinge. Galaxy Z Fold5 now uses an Armor Aluminum frame with a Victus 2 glass to protect its back and external display from severe drops and scratches which is of course needed when you are buying a phone so delicate but costs a tonne.

Z Fold5 reasons IPX8 water standards which hint that the South Korean giant isn’t certain about dust protection yet. Perhaps, the folding flat hinge will have less susceptibility to dust which is good news, right?

The Dual Display

As usual, we have two displays on the device. The external or secondary display uses a 6.2” Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel boasting a 2316×904 pixels resolution and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Head towards the internal or primary display and you are looking at a 7.6” Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 2176×1812 pixels resolution and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate that dips down to 1Hz. The panel shines up at 1,750 nits making it 30% brighter than last year’s model.

The Power Train

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 packs in a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood which is the same as the Galaxy S23 series. The larger area on its overhauled cooling system ensures the phone can dissipate heat better than others. It runs on Android 13-powered OneUI 5.1.1 OS onboard as well.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

We have up to 1TB UFS 4.0 storage along with 12GB of RAM onboard that you can choose from. On the battery side, there’s a 4,400mAh battery baked in with the usual 25W wired fast charging. It will take the device 30 minutes to charge to 50%. Luckily the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC is battery-efficient unlike Gen 1 so the battery shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

The Camera Onboard

There has been much said and discussed about optics onboard Galaxy Z Fold5 even before the phone could make it to the public. On the optics side, we have a triple rear camera setup at the back arranged in a vertical stack that protrudes a bit above its camera bump. It packs in a 50MP primary shooter, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP 3x zoom shooter.

When it comes to front cameras, we have the usual 10MP on the cover screen and a 4MP in-display shooter on the foldable primary display that reveals itself only when called for. As you can guess, the specs remain the same although Samsung has improved its performances. For the unversed, it’s not only the optic hardware that matters but software matters too.

Everything Else To Know About Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5

South Korean juggernaut has improved the user experience on the device. It now has many improvements in terms of multitasking. You can open up to four recent apps and switch between them without any hassle. Add in a new and stylish S Pen Fold Edition to get more out of that enormous display that almost feels like a tablet but ain’t.

The phone brings onboard 8K@24fps video recording, stereo speaker, tri-band Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB Type-C 3.2, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a few things here and there.
