When we talk about the latest trend in smartphones, they are 5G and foldable phones. As far as 5G is concerned, we can say that they can be available in budget and flagship range of phones right now and they will come to the entry-level phones down the line too. However, we can’t say the same about the trend of foldable smartphones because we know that foldable technology is quite expensive right now. Only Samsung and Motorola have managed to sell their foldable smartphones commercially right now which also tells you how viable these phones are to make and sell.

As far as foldable smartphones are concerned, we have the Galaxy Fold and Flip series from Samsung and Motorola’s Razr in the market. All these smartphones cost well above the USD 1000 mark which is considered the gold standard price range for top-of-the-line flagship phones like the iPhone 11 Pro series as well as the Samsung S20 series. Since the foldable phones cost a lot more than that while providing the same specifications, only enthusiasts are able to buy these phones and they are nowhere close to wider adoption.

But a new report suggests that Samsung is making a cheaper foldable smartphone in its lineup which might be codenamed as the SM-F415. Breaking down the codename, SM stands for Samsung and the F stands for foldable while the rest is device number. SamMobile’s report mentions that the device will be “genuinely affordable” and meant for the “mass market”.

The report adds that this cheaper foldable device will be available in 64 or 128GB storage variants and have a variety of colour options such as black, green and blue. The design option Samsung is likely to take for this device is of the Galaxy Flip rather than the Galaxy Fold.

As in, we will see a clamshell design for this device rather than a phone that becomes a tablet like the Galaxy Fold and Fold 2. In addition, we know that clamshell phones are slightly cheaper to make since the Galaxy Flip costs $1380 which is $500 cheaper than the Galaxy Fold so we think that a $700-$800 price for this cheaper Galaxy Z Flip 2 could be possible.

And this is not to say that the sub-$700 price is cheap because it is not and there are dozens of great smartphones in this range but for someone looking to have their first foldable smartphone, this is a good investment to make.
