Samsung’s ‘unbreakable’ flexible OLED display has been in the news for some time now and Samsung exactly knows how to stay on the headlines. Welcome the ‘unbreakable’ screens by Samsung Display that have been extensively tested to survive drops without any damage. According to a report published by Samsung, the South Korean tech giant received a certification from Underwriters Laboratories that works under U.S. Department of Labor’ Occupational Safety and Health Administration thereby paving way for foldable smartphones ahead.
The flexible OLED display with ‘plastic’ substrate that Samsung could roll out as soon as this year’ Galaxy Note 9 was subjected to multiple drops where it survived a whopping 26 drops from a height of 1.2 meters or 4 feet. When scrutinized, there wasn’t any damage to the panel even after the authority tested it for temperature resistance and much more. Samsung further added that the panel was also subjected to survive a six feet fall and the results were, there were no signs of damage even after undergoing a series of extrinsic and extensively harsh tests.
Samsung Display, the panel maker arm of Samsung Electronics also demonstrated the ‘unbreakable’ OLED panel in a video where the flexible plastic substrate layer on the OLED panel withstood several pounds with a hammer with no even scratches on its surface while the other panel with a glass window which is used ordinarily would have shatter big time. Samsung adds that the plastic panel is not only for flexible smartphones but also suitable for portable game consoles, mobile military devices, tablet PCs, automobiles, and other applications.
It is touted as an ‘unbreakable’ flexible OLED panel compared to any other flexible panel available commercially. Samsung’s sales have been falling gradually due to the fact that they keep on upgrading the same smartphone in order to create a new iteration every year without actually upgrading the device overall. Samsung has caught people’ attention thanks to the supposedly first-ever ‘foldable’ smartphone that will be rolled out as soon as early next year.
As of now, 2017 ZTE Axon M remains at the top position with dual screens attached together by a hinge that lets the user switch between a phone and a tablet. However, the upcoming Samsung ‘foldable’ smartphone will have a hinge-less OLED screen for which, Samsung Displays have been researchers for quite a lot of time now.

The only rival that Samsung has right now is Huawei which is a China-based smartphone manufacturer ranking at the third position in terms of global volume sales. Huawei has teased about its ‘foldable’ smartphone after joining hands with BOE, another China-based panel maker which has expertise in creating flexible OLED panels. Huawei is estimated to launch its foldable smartphone ahead of Samsung similar to how it did with Apple for its sapphire crystal display, HiSilicon Kirin 970 AI chip, and more.
Samsung will roll out the new plastic OLED display with Samsung Galaxy Note 9 scheduled to launch on August 9. A Samsung foldable smartphone is touted to launch in the first half of 2019 that will be a truly foldable phone with an OLED display if Huawei didn’t release its own foldable phone which is highly likely to happen.
