The under-display fingerprint scanner is a thing that we haven’t seen on any smartphone yet despite several speculations of it being included in devices like Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8, and iPhone 8. But the recent developments indicate that Vivo will be the first smartphone maker to achieve the feat.

A handful of images has leaked on Weibo that show a smartphone with triple cameras on the back along with an on-display fingerprint scanner. In one of the images, that seems to be a press render of the device; the Vivo Xplay 7 can be seen with a design that is very similar to the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 from the front.

While the device looks extremely thin in the image, the back of the phone has a vertically placed triple-camera system. If that wasn’t enough, the front of the phone would have two cameras, so the phone has five cameras in total. For now, I am not sure how the three cameras will work or how Vivo will be implementing them.

For those who haven’t noticed, the phone doesn’t have any home button or any other dedicated place for the fingerprint scanner, but the fingerprint scanner icon can be seen on the screen. It is highly likely that we see at the first smartphone that will sport an under-display fingerprint scanner.

During the recent Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, Qualcomm and Vivo had showcased a device that had a fingerprint scanner placed underneath its display. The device was a modified version of the Vivo Xplay 6 and used Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner technology that the company has been working on since a few years.

Qualcomm had informed that the display-mounted fingerprint scanner would be available for commercial devices in Q4 2017 and we expect Vivo to launch the device during that time frame itself. The other image, which seems to be a presentation, also reveals the internal codename of the phone as Vivo X20.

Rumors say that the Vivo Xplay 7 will launch with a top of the line specifications like Snapdragon 835 processor and 6GB/8GB of RAM. The images show a large display on the front with curved edges. More details should come in as we move closer to its launch in the coming months.
