Xiaomi has released a bunch of images to confirm the design of the upcoming Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones. The two phones will go official this week at an event scheduled for December 7th. These images confirm a few important features of the phone including an 18:9 display and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

For the most part, the phones look anything like a Xiaomi phone would, it’s just the front that seems changed. Most of the front is taken by the display that has now gone for a taller 18:9 aspect ratio, a first for the Redmi series. There is a fair amount of chin bezel, but the phone will go for on-screen navigation keys.

Over at the back, there is a single camera along with a fingerprint scanner sitting in the middle. As it can be seen in the images, the back is made out of metal for the middle portion, while the top and bottom of the back have plastic for a better cellular reception. The headphone jack and infrared blaster sit on the top while the micro-USB port and the speaker are at the bottom.

As per the previously leaked information on TENAA, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will sport a 5.7-inch 720p display. A Snapdragon 450 processor will power the device along with Adreno 506 and there will be three RAM and storage variants – 2GB + 16GB, 3GB + 32GB, and 4GB + 64GB. All the variants will have an expansion slot.

The dual-SIM phone would come running MIUI 9 over Android 7.1.2 Nougat. There will be a 12MP camera on the back along with a 5MP selfie camera. Surprisingly enough, the battery capacity of the Redmi 5 would be 3200mAh, a significant dip from the 4000mAh capacity on the Redmi 4.

We’re yet to the detailed specifications of the devices, but some reports have also suggested that the Redmi 5 Plus will carry a better processor and a bigger battery. It might come powered by Snapdragon 625 and sport a 4000mAh battery. Most of the remaining details about the two phones will be revealed at the Thursday event.
