Last year, Samsung unveiled its first 7nm FinFET process manufactured Exynos 9820 chipsets that were ready to ship with Samsung Galaxy S10 series launched in February this year. We are just a few months in 2019 and Samsung Electronics has successfully developed its next chipset interestingly made on a 5nm node,

Based on Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) technology, the new chipset is manufactured using a 5nm manufacturing process which is capable of reducing the power consumption by 20 percent, increase performance by 10 percent, and escalate logic area efficiency by 25 percent thanks to its next-gen EUV technology that it used with the previous 7nm node as well.

According to Samsung’s press release, the 5nm chip uses the same intellectual properties as the 7nm chip which reduces mitigation costs while allowing companies to migrate to 5nm node without any hassle and that too at a quotation that falls light on pockets. Further, Samsung Electronics which is a leader in the advanced semiconductor industry is also working on a customized 6nm chipset based on its EUV technology and has successfully received its first product to integrate and roll out soon.

On the other hand, the new 5nm chipset is ready for sampling with companies and we could see the first smartphones using the new chip by 2020 in the same time as Samsung will launch the next Samsung Galaxy S series aka Galaxy S11 unless the South Korean tech giant thinks of a different moniker for it like the ‘XI’ but that would look identical to the rumored Apple iPhone XI (2019).

The new chipset will allow a number of applications to work seamlessly such as high-performance computing, 5G, AI, and others thanks to the proprietary EUV lithography technology that it will be utilizing to create advanced products in the products.

Samsung Electronics will be manufacturing the new chipset in its foundry located at the S3-line in Hwaseong, South Korea and as per the timeline is concerned, the assembly line will set up by the second half of 2019 and the tech giant will start producing early next year.

As of now, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 is a 7nm chipset while Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset is also manufactured on 7nm manufacturing process that puts Samsung ahead of the game unless Qualcomm is working on the same as well.
