Huawei has released a 10-second teaser video of its upcoming HiSilicon Kirin 990 chipset expected to arrive on September 6 at IFA Berlin 2019. Although the teaser video provides little to no details on the upcoming SoC, it does include that the chipset will feature 5G capabilities.
Based on previous reports, China-based TSMC will manufacture the Kirin 990 SoC based on 7nm EUV process and will bring 20% greater transistor density. This loosely means that there will be a surge in power efficiency as well as consumption that will outpace Kirin 980 SoC that we have already seen with Huawei P30 Pro.
Moving further, the upcoming SoC teased along the Ascend 910 launch earlier today will have a Mali-G77 GPU along with ARM’s Cortex-A77 CPU cores based on Huawei’s Da Vinci architecture and will probably bring enhanced NPU which is a critical component called Neural Processing Unit which handles processes at an exponential rate compared to CPUs and GPUs. We have already seen Huawei affixing dual NPU with Kirin 980 SoC where although the number of units might not change, the power efficiency will surely do.
Next piece of information available with us is that the SoC will support 4K video recordings are 60fps which is the first for Huawei chipsets. Also, Kirin 990 will bring built-in 5G capabilities onboard and it is speculated to make its debut in the now-delayed Huawei Mate X although it is speculation as of now. Also, based on the previous timelines, it won’t be shocking if Huawei Mate 30 series becomes the first recipient of the enhanced chipset such as Huawei Mate 20 Pro got Kirin 980 SoC.
Huawei is working on the next Mate 30 series and will likely pair it up with its most-powerful chipset i.e. the Kirin 990 SoC confirmed to debut at September 6 so let’s wait and see what it brings on the table.
