We know that Apple has been having a great run in the market lately and whatever they have touched has turned to gold. While the move to transition from Intel to Custom Silicon was a risky move, Apple did it quite brilliantly.
Already, the company has transitioned most of its products from Intel chips to its custom silicon known as Apple M-series chips. We know that the Mac Mini, Macbook Air, and 13-inch Macbook Pro were launched with Apple M1 chip which was also the debut of the M1 chip.
After that, Apple saw the success of M1 chips and brought them to the iMac and the latest move was to put an M1 chip in the 14 and 16-inch Macbook Pro albeit in a powerful version of it called the M1 Pro and M1 Max respectively.
Now, we expect the company to bring these M-series chips to the Mac Pro, iMac Pro and also bring forward the M2 chip which will be an upgrade over the M1 chip. However, we have somewhat of a shocker right now as Apple’s custom silicon architecture lead has left the company.
Jeff Wilcox, the Mac architecture lead at Apple, left the company a few days back and he has also announced that he is joining Intel on his LinkedIn page. At Intel, he will be designing their new SoCs or system-on-chips and Intel would hope that Jeff would help them bring them back to their glory days.
Also, Jeff Wilcox was at Intel when he left the company in 2013 to join Apple so it is a homecoming for Jeff as he joins back Intel after 8 years. Wilcox reveals that he has joined Intel as “Intel Fellow, Design Engineering Group CTO, Client SoC Architecture at Intel Corporation”.
Since Jeff has seen Apple’s recent developments and also knows the company’s plans for the future, Intel would be very pleased that he has joined the company and would want him to make Intel’s SoCs as efficient and powerful as Apple’s chips are.
