Google has officially launched the Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 update for Pixel devices, building on the stable release of Android 15 from last month. The Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) updates bring major enhancements and new features beyond monthly bug fixes. Android 15 QPR2 is set for its full release in March 2025.

Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 introduces several exciting features, as highlighted by tech expert Mishaal Rahman:

  • Customizable Do Not Disturb Modes: Users can now personalize Do Not Disturb schedules, offering more refined control over notifications.
  • Linux Terminal App: Google has added a Linux Terminal app, allowing developers to run Linux apps in a virtual environment on Pixel devices.
  • Enhanced Touchpad & Mouse Settings: Touchpad and mouse settings are now consolidated into a submenu with options for pointer color customization.
  • Mouse Keys: Users can control the mouse cursor using the numpad on an external keyboard.
  • Linux 6.1 Kernel Upgrade: Expected to roll out with QPR2 Beta 2, this upgrade will enhance performance on Tensor G1, G2, and G3-powered Pixel devices.
  • Icon Shape Customization: Originally available in Android 11 and removed in Android 12, the option to customize icon shapes returns exclusively for Pixel devices.

Supported devices for Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1

The QPR2 Beta 1 update is available for a range of Pixel devices:

  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a
  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold

Once enrolled into the Beta program, you will receive an OTA update. Devices already on Android 15 QPR1 Beta will auto-deploy with QPR2 Beta 1.

You can check for the update manually in Settings > System > System Update. In this build, you will find an Android Beta Feedback app that allows reporting of bugs in case you encounter issues with the update.

Opting out of Beta

If you wish to exit the Beta program without wiping your device, you can do so before installing the QPR2 Beta 1 update. However, opting out after installing will result in a data wipe.

Additional testing features: 16 KB Mode

It is also possible to try the app in 16 KB mode with enhanced memory management. This 16 KB mode begins Android 15 QPR1 and is available on the following select devices:

  • Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro (Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1 or higher)
  • Pixel 8a (Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 or higher)

This feature enables developers to boot compatible devices in a 16 KB memory configuration, simplifying unique on-device testing for improving app performance in varied memory scenarios.
